Plastic consumption in Canada

Canada has the longest coastline in the world, touching three oceans, the Pacific, Arctic and Atlantic, and consequently, the impacts caused by climate change in the oceans affect Canada's population and economy.

However, what Canadians do not imagine, is that the population itself is cooperating in this climate change, with all the plastic waste. To be more precise, 57 million straws every day and 15 billion plastic bags each year - according to the Canadian government.

It is estimated that the Canadian population wastes 3.3 million tons of plastic per year, with 2.8 million ending up in landfills. More than one third of plastics are created for single-use products or packaging.

On the other hand, 93% of Canadians, say or feel “upset, disappointed, angry and/or surprised” with the fact that only 9% of plastic ever produced has been recycled. (Abacus Data). The first step to stop this crazy single-use plastic consumption has been taken. The Canadian Government will ban harmful and unnecessary single-use plastics in 2021. This action can help turn the tide on this massive environmental crisis.

Let’s encourage each other to stop single-use consumption. There are so many other possibilities. Let’s take care of our country and the world together! We’ve got this.
